5 of our favourite romantic experiences

Whale and dolphin watching by private catamaran
Boarding the boat at Mirissa, you will set sail for the Indian Ocean on a stunning and modern catamaran complete with a professional crew, all safety equipment and a well-equipped kitchen where the chef will whip you up a delicious full breakfast and a three course lunch. As soon as the guide spots whales, you’ll be invited up to the top deck or front of the boat to get the best views: Sperm Whales and Blue Whales are the most commonly-spotted. After the whale-watching you’ll head back towards Weligama Bay, anchoring close to Taprobane Island for the chance to jump into the water and try some stand up paddle boarding or snorkeling. Finish with a delicious lunch before heading back to Mirissa.
Roti dinner in a rice paddy
JEN roti exp
Prepare to have your breath taken away as you dine amidst verdant green rice paddies in a garden lit by hundreds of candles and torches. A scattering of flower petals will guide your way to the pavilion where your own private butlers will serve you a roti dinner, a traditional street food cuisine in Sri Lanka. Roti is a type of thin flat bread that is served with a range of different fillings from the very orthodox vegetable-and spice-filled rotis to the less conventional banana and chocolate roti. This is a unique chance to try a new cuisine in an intimate and romantic setting.
Kanneliya rainforest trek
JEN Rainforest trekking
The Kanneliya rainforest is Sri Lanka’s lesser known forest reserve, with two of the island’s main rivers running through it and a diverse range of wildlife living within its thick canopy. Neatly tucked away just 35km away from Galle, the forest reserve also houses around 78 villages. The wildlife tracker who will guide you in Kanneliya is from one of these forest reserve villages and has spent his entire lifetime living within the reserve. The scenery in the area is straight out of the Jungle Book: monkeys, snakes, chameleons, extensive birdlife and a vast range of tropical trees, plants and flowers. Stop for a drink and a piece of cake along the way at a beautiful waterfall, and then finish up with lunch served at a table in the shallows of an idyllic lake.
High Tea at Galle Face Hotel
JEN high tea
Settle down to an extensive collection of loose leaf tea, cakes, sandwiches, pastries and scones in a quintessentially colonial setting overlooking the Indian Ocean. Galle Face Hotel is testimony to Sri Lanka’s colonial past: the second-oldest hotel in Asia, it was originally opened in 1864 by four British entrepreneurs and expanded into a two-storey luxury property thirty years later. Refurbished in 2006, it now offers a contemporary colonial feel, immediately resonant of a bygone age.
Leopard Safaris experience: private safari with Sri Lanka’s ‘leopard man’
Leopard yala
Yala’s arid boulder-scattered parklands are dramatically different from the lush jungles and paddy fields that cover so much of the island. Spanning 100,000 hectares of dry thorny scrub and dusty glades, you could easily be in an African bushveld. Starting either at 5AM or at 3PM, ‘the leopard man’ will take you on a 2.5 hour game drive into the national park. In the evening gather around the campfire to enjoy a range of international drinks from our jungle bar. With the sounds of the jungle around you and the campfire casting a romantic glaze over the natural surroundings, you can’t help but be enchanted by the unique experience of being in the jungle at night.
